Ernakulam is the Most Urbanised District in Kerala

According to Census 2011, with 11 municipalities and a municipal corporation, Ernakulam tops the list of the most urbanised districts in the state of Kerala with 68.07 percent of its residents living in urban areas. Out of the total population of 32,79,860 in Ernakulam district, 22,32,564 of them lives in urban areas, while the rural population in Ernakulam district comprises of around 10,47,296.

While the total population in Ernakulam had gone up by a mere 5.60 per cent since the previous census in 2001, the urban population has witnessed a growth of 51.15 per cent, while the rural population has dipped by 35.70 per cent. The increase in urban population of Ernakulam district does not necessarily mean that more people are migrating to urban areas, but it has been due to the rapid urbanisation over the last decade.

Ernakulam district has witnessed the effects of rapid urbanisation during the past decade. Kochi city, for instance, has fastly spread towards westward, to the islands dotting the backwaters, as well as eastwards. Of the total urban population in Ernakulam 11,33,002 are women and 9.04 per cent of its urban population are children below the age of 6. Ernakulam is followed by Thrissur (67.19 per cent), Kozhikode (67.15 per cent) and Kannur (65.05 per cent), when it comes to urban population.
